A dry socket is a painful dental condition occurring after an adult tooth is removed. A dry socket can occur three to four days after an adult tooth is removed. A dry socket is formed when the blood clot at the site of the tooth extraction fails to develop, or it dislodges or dissolves before the wound has healed. In most cases, a dry socket will heal on its own, but as the site heals, patients will likely continue to experience discomfort. Your dentist will likely recommend saltwater or prescription rinse. If your dry socket is more severe, they'll provide instructions on how and when to add a new dressing at home. Over-the-counter pain medication can help relieve any discomfort.
